December 2015

Gordon Fyfe, chairman of Highlands and Islands Media Awards

Once again we have been inundated with entries for the Highlands and Islands Media Awards, demonstrating that even during tough times for the industry there is still plenty of quality work being carried out in the region.

Over the next few days our judges will be completing the task of assessing 108 written, online and broadcast news stories and features, as well as a selection of photographs and will pick their favourites of the year.

On Monday (21 December) we will reach a consensus and finalise a shortlist in 11 categories. We will publish the short-list on our website www.pressball.info on Wednesday 23 December. The winners will be announced at the Highlands and Islands Press Ball on Friday 5 February.

It’s a big responsibility and no one should under-estimate the time it takes to read, analyse and compare so many entries. Credit is due to the judges for the time they devote to this, especially during such a busy period.

It is, however, an extremely rewarding task. I can honestly say the standard has never been higher and it is hugely encouraging to see so many talented people involved in our industry providing such good service to their readers, listeners and viewers.

Our judges have a wealth of experience and a keen interest in Highlands and Islands issues and the region’s media.

I am a former journalist and communications manager with The Highland Council; Nicola McAlley is Highlands and Islands reporter for STV; Iain Macdonald is an ex BBC Scotland news reporter who is still working in broadcast journalism; and John Ross, former Highlands and Islands correspondent with The Scotsman, is news and media manager at Lucid PR.

Taking care of the Gaelic entries are Mairi Bertram, a media relations officer with Highlands and Islands Enterprise and Steven MacIomhair, corporate and communications manager from Bòrd na Gàidhlig. Lesley Gallagher, digital communications manager with Highlands and Islands Enterprise, is providing specialist knowledge in judging the digital entries and freelance photographer Ewen Weatherspoon is guiding us in the photography sections.

We are extremely grateful to the awards sponsors, Diageo, the National Union of Journalists, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Bòrd na Gàidhlig and Highland Opportunity Ltd. Without them we would not be able to stage this annual contest.
Many of us on the judging panel have won these or other awards before so we know how important winning, or even making the shortlist, is. Good luck to everyone and we hope to see many of you at the Press Ball
